Vintage E.A. Berg Eskilstuna Swedish Socket Chisels (pair) - $85
We found these chisels at an estate sale and thought they deserved to be brought back to life! These came to us very well loved and needed a bit of work. After some time spent cleaning up and quality time with the sharpening stones, we have a pair of really nice Swedish steel chisels! For those unfamiliar with Swedish steel, it is a phenomenal steel to cut with. Easy to sharpen and holds a great edge. It is a carbon steel and will rust if it is left out in the elements or if moisture is not cleaned off of it. Swedish steel rivals Japanese steels and is a great tool to add to your collection. The vintage charm of them is something we love about them as well!
A bit of information about the E.A. Berg brand. These are made by the Erik Anton Berg manufacturing company in the town of Eskilstuna, Sweden. They were founded in 1880 and sold many products like: plane blades, chisels, straight razors, and knives. In the 1950’s they were sold in the North American markets under the “shark brand” because of their logo. Fun fact, that “shark” actually started out as a Wels Catfish and eventually became the shark that they are known for. the E.A. Berg company was eventually sold to Sandvik and is still being sold today under the Bahco name.
These chisels are the same as the ones out of the 1936 catalogue, but it is hard to specifically date these chisels as there isn’t much documentation available with this brand. The construction of these chisels are in the same style as Japanese made chisels with sockets rather than a tang. These beveled chisels are really nice to use and really cut easily. The handles are made with Masur Birch and is a really lovely material! It is stronger than regular Birch and is not common to see in North America.
Here are some details about each chisel.
6mm - The sticker is about 80% on it and all the text is still visible. No stamp on the blade itself and still has lots of life left to it. There is no ferrule on this handle and the handle is in great condition. This has been sharpened up to 8000 grit and it is sharp!
10mm - The sticker is about 30% on this and most of the text is not visible. You can tell it has been well used over the years! The ferrule is in good shape and is nice and tight, no rattling at all! Despite the lack of sticker, the handle itself is still in great shape. Sharpened up to 8000 grit and is super sharp. The chisel has a slight ridge near the stamp, potentially to prevent accidental removal of the stamp. The ridge does not affect the usage of the chisel and is very slight!
The set includes:
1 x 6mm chisel
1 x 10mm chisel
